Time for reflection

In March of this year, when the world went into lockdown everyone thought it would be a temporary measure, but now we are in October and the working restrictions do not seem to be coming to an end anytime in the near future.

This has therefore led to a time of reflection for many organisations, as temporary measures now have to be replaced with short- to medium-term permanent measures. Add to that the drawing to a close of many of the government financial incentives some difficult decisions are having to be made.

However, such reflection does not have to be a negative thing, as it offers an opportunity to ensure your business is running in as efficient a manner as it possibly can.

Review the business

When taking time to reflect it is important to identify your starting position:

  • Where is your business today?
  • How efficient is it?
  • What is working and what isn’t working?
  • What are the niggles your staff have about hardware, software, processes etc?
  • Are your processes aiding or hindering your progress?
  • How do you fare in relation to your nearest competitors?

Whilst the answers to some of these questions may be challenging, they are key to getting your business on the path to where you want it to be.

New position

Once you’ve identified where your business is currently it’s time to identify where you want to be in the next six months or a year. Although it may not seem the best time to be planning so far ahead, considering the current climate, if you don’t you can pretty much guarantee your competitors are, and they will be the ones who survive the measures unscathed.

  • Where do you want to be in six months?
  • Can your business pivot to overcome the current crisis?
  • What new products do you want to launch?
  • What old products do you want to remove?
  • Are there new areas of your industry you would like to explore?
  • How can you streamline your processes?
  • How can you make your staff more productive?

Identifying where you want to be and where you currently are means you are able to put together a plan of how to get there and what processes you need to put in place.

Get your ducks in a row

Identifying the disparity between where you are and where you want to be enables you to work out what steps you need to take to get there.

To achieve your goals do you need:

  • More or less staff?
  • Smaller/bigger or different premises?
  • New technology (hardware/software) to achieve your goals?
  • Better training for your staff?

This could be an exciting time for your company – an opportunity to use this time of reflection and uncertainty to get your company on a healthy growth trajectory.

Not all changes to advance your company require new technology but if that is what is potentially holding your organisation’s growth back then it is the time to invest. However, this is not a decision to be taken lightly.
